Carbon Audits & Carbon Management

Conducting a Carbon Audit (also referred to as carbon footprinting) is a vital first step in the development of a Carbon Management Strategy for companies and organisations aiming to minimise their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and thereby their contribution to anthropogenic climate change. The primary objective of a carbon audit is to measure and record an organisations GHG emissions associated with its significant activities over a one year period. Put simply; measuring GHG emissions is the first step to effectively managing them.

Emission releasing activities are categorised into three scopes comprising Scope 1 Direct Emissions such as fuel combustion in owned boilers and transport, Scope 2 Energy Indirect such as the consumption of purchased electricity and Scope 3 Other Indirect which are other emissions that occur as a consequence of an organisations actions such as emissions associated with business travel. The carbon auditing process typically involves a site audit to review records, inspect premises and interview key staff followed by the generation of a project database and detailed calculations to measure the emissions generated within the operational boundaries of the audit. The information is collated into a Carbon Audit Report which includes GHG emissions as a gross yearly figure in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) as well as a detailed breakdown of the activity-specific yearly emissions. The report also includes recommendations on potential carbon reduction initiatives that could be implemented by the organisation under assessment over the short, medium and long term.

SLP Environmentals SE Asian carbon audits are undertaken and reported in accordance with guidance contained within the GHG Protocol; Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard as developed by the World Resources Institute and World Business Council for Sustainable Development. This is the internationally recognised standard for the corporate accounting and reporting of GHG emissions as it aligns with many other national and international measuring and reporting schemes such as ISO 14040 and ISO 14064-1.
