Carbon Auditing & Carbon Management Project Experience
Service: Strategic Carbon Audits
Location: Southern UK
Client: Utility Company
Project Value: Confidential SLP personnel were appointed to undertake and report a Carbon Audit for a multi-national utility company whose board has decided to take a proactive stance on climate change. The company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy included a commitment to embed environmental sustainability considerations into the executive decision making process and as a consequence they instructed SLP personnel to undertake Carbon Audits for over thirty proposed water resource options as part of a strategic water resources review.
Our Carbon Management team formulated a phased approach to the commission that included detailed reviews of the activities associated with each option and the determination of the appropriate Emission Factors for each activity based on authoritative national and international best practice guidance such as the GHG Protocol; Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard. Our corporate reporting included the GHG emissions for each option both as a gross figure in tonnes of CO2e as well as a detailed breakdown of the activity-specific emissions associated with each option. The report also included intensity ratios for Scope 1 and 2 emissions in order to facilitate performance comparisons over time with other corporations engaged in similar activities as well as recommendations on appropriate carbon reduction initiatives for the short, medium and longer term with associated timeframes and indicative costs.

Service: Development of Carbon Calculator
Location: UK
Client: Consultant
Project Value: Confidential
SLP personnel initiated and led the development of a web-based interactive Remediation Options Carbon Calculator (ROCC) tool. The objective of the project was to develop a simple to use online carbon calculation tool for commercial release to the environmental services and construction sector. The first roll out of the tool was designed to assess the carbon dioxide emissions associated with a range of land remediation options as part of environmental sustainability appraisal exercise. These options include:
· Excavate and Export
· Soil Washing
· Bioremediation
· Thermal Desorption
· Ex-situ Stabilisation/Solidification
The tool is designed in such a way that it can both appraise a single remedial solution or a range of solutions implemented under a treatment train approach. Furthermore, by using the tool in "Excavate and Export" ROCC can also calculate the carbon dioxide emissions associated with the earthworks phase of a construction project. The second roll out of the tool will include functionality to assess carbon dioxide emissions associated with the implementation of groundwater treatment technologies such as total fluids abstraction and in-situ chemical oxidation. The tool is currently being beta tested and is due for release shortly.
