SLP Environmental was appointed by a global logistics client to provide a package of environmental due diligence Asset Screening studies and combined Phase 1 and Phase 2 Environmental Site Assessments for a portfolio of 30 properties across Vietnam. The primary objective of the combined Phase 1/ Phase 2 studies was to provide a rapid determination as to the contamination status of the soil and shallow groundwater body underlying the properties that risk screening exercise indicated were higher risk. Combined Phase 1/ Phase 2 ESA’s were instructed for several sites including operational petrol stations. The studies were instructed by the client as part of the Lenders (International Finance Corporation) E&S requirements.
The studies included services associated with performing combined Phase 1 and 2 Environmental Site Assessments (as per ASTM E1527-13 and E1903-11 practice) of multiple Petrol Station sites in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The Phase I ESA study comprised of desk study, site and environs reconnaissance and interviews with key informants. This facilitated the development of a preliminary conceptual site model (CSM) for the property and a determination as to whether any Recognised Environmental Conditions (REC) were associated with the subject property.
The Phase 2 ESA comprised of an intrusive site investigation that targeted the likely release areas identified during the Phase 1 ESA. The scope of works included the rotary boring of five exploratory holes and the installation of temporary groundwater monitoring wells in selected soil bores. Soil and groundwater samples were recovered and submitted to an ISO:17025 accredited laboratory for analysis for a range of potential contaminants of concern (PCOC). The laboratory test results were compared against Vietnamese and USEPA Soil and Groundwater Quality Standards to determine the contamination status of the property.
A wellhead position and elevation survey was undertaken to determine the hydraulic gradient in the shallow aquifer and strict QA/QC procedures were followed throughout the study. The studies were presented in a combined Phase 1/ Phase 2 ESA report format corresponding with practice presented in ASTM E1527-13 &E1903-11 and GIIP.
