Environmental & Social Management System

Animal Nutrition Manufacturing Facility, Cambodia

SLP Environmental Co., Ltd was appointed by an International Financial Institution (IFI) to perform environmental and social due diligence (ESDD) on a large animal feed manufacturing facility located in Kampong Speu Province, Cambodia. The ESDD revealed that the Target Company did not have a formal Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) to effectively manage the Environmental and Social (E&S) risks and impacts associated with its business activities and SLP was subsequently appointed to prepare an ESMS on behalf of the Target Company. The benefits of an effective ESMS includes:

  • Enhanced understanding of legal requirements and best practice pertaining to environmental and social performance;
  • Risk reduction and impact avoidance/mitigation, including costs associated with ESG incidents and potential remedial actions;
  • Early identification of potential E&S risks associated with land, property and business acquisitions;
  • Better operational efficiency and reduced costs;
  • Greater employee retention and productivity;
  • Improved external relations and public image;
  • Increased access to clients, markets and investors which demand robust E&S management;
  • Improved OHS performance and reduction in accident and incident rates; and
  • Improved management of suppliers and contractors thereby reducing potential for substandard Labour and OHS practices.

Each ESMS is tailored to the specific E&S risks and impacts associated with a particular operation, as identified during the ESDD assessment. The key components of the ESMS developed for the Company are provided in the side bar on the right.

Once the ESMS was approved by the Client and the Company, SLP provided high level ESMS training to senior Company personnel tasked with implementing and taking ownership of the management system moving forwards.

SLP specialises in providing environmental and social management system services in South East Asia on behalf of project financiers and project sponsors.
